Updated China Work Permit Policy

According to the latest information obtained by the Shanghai Foreign Experts Bureau, starting from February 3, 2026, there will be a major update to the work permit policy for foreigners (Shanghai). The approval standards for the salary levels of Class A and Class B of work permits for foreigners coming to China will be officially adjusted. Class A must strictly follow the Shanghai average social wage of 6 times, and Class B must follow the standard of 4 times. This standard is significantly higher than the original requirements. The specific details are compared as shown in the following figure:

Category

New

Before

A-class - 6 times salary

74,604 RMB/month

50,000 RMB/month

B-class - 4 times salary

49,736 RMB/month

33,333 RMB/month

Please note: The new salary standards apply to both new applications and renewal applications. Applicants who have previously been approved and whose applications for Category A and B salaries meet the requirements of Category A - 6 times the salary and Category B - 4 times the salary must meet the requirements of the new corresponding latest salary standards when renewing their contracts.

If the salary of experts holding the aforementioned two types of work permits fails to meet the aforementioned threshold this year, they will need to undergo a re-evaluation and apply under other categories when extending their permits. This may result in the need to provide additional materials during the application process, such as bachelor degree + authentication, and proof of no criminal record + authentication. AC can provide applicants with bachelor authentication and no-criminal record application and authentication (including Hague certification) in Shanghai without returning to the issuing country. Additionally, AC recommends that if you fall under the above circumstances, please start preparing 3.5 months before the expiration of your work permit. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time.
